BACKGROUND

South Africa's parking and facilities management sector is undergoing a significant shift toward cashless, self-service payment infrastructure. As consumers increasingly expect fast, contactless transactions in everyday environments — from shopping malls to open-air car parks — parking operators face growing pressure to modernise their payment kiosks while maintaining reliability, security, and ease of use.

Hub Parking Technology Holdings (Pty) Ltd is a leading provider of parking management systems across South Africa and the broader MEA region. Operating across high-traffic commercial venues, including major shopping centres, Hub Parking deploys VMC kiosk systems that manage parking access, tariff calculation, and fee collection at scale.Seeking a modern, feature-complete unattended payment terminal to replace ageing hardware and meet rising consumer expectations, Hub Parking selected Newland NPT's U2000 Android Unattended SmartPOS which integrated directly into their existing VMC parking kiosk infrastructure and managed remotely via Newland's TOMS platform. The deployment is now live across multiple sites in South Africa, marking Newland NPT's entry into the unattended parking vertical in the MEA region.

Integration with Local Protocol Parking Infrastructure

Parking kiosk operators rely on established communication protocols to connect payment modules to their host vending and ticketing systems. Finding a modern Android payment terminal that natively supports existing  protocol while also offering a full suite of consumer payment options — NFC, Chip & PIN, and QR code — was a critical requirement that many competing terminals failed to meet.

Newland NPT Solution
U2000 is purpose-built for unattended environments with native existing protocol, enabling seamless integration into Hub Parking's VMC kiosk systems without custom hardware modification. Once embedded, the terminal supports NFC contactless, Chip & PIN, and QR code payments in a single device — giving shoppers at Bedford Centre and other Hub Parking sites a complete, modern payment experience. Full wireless connectivity via 4G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth ensures real-time transaction processing and reliable uptime across all deployed sites.

PIN Security and User Privacy in a Public Environment

Unattended payment terminals deployed in public spaces such as shopping mall car parks must address a fundamental security concern: protecting cardholder PIN entry from visual observation. In high-footfall environments, this is both a compliance requirement and a direct customer trust issue.Hub Parking required a terminal that could provide visible PIN privacy without compromising the sleek, integrated look of their kiosk units.

Newland NPT Solution
U2000's 5-inch full-lamination display with adjustable backlight significantly reduces light reflection and glare, minimising screen visibility from side angles during PIN entry. Combined with PCI 6.X certification, the terminal meets the highest current standards for cardholder data security in unattended deployments. The compact, kiosk-embeddable form factor also allows for physical privacy screen accessories to be fitted, giving Hub Parking full control over the PIN entry security posture at each site.

Remote Management and Kiosk Mode Control Across Distributed Sites

Managing a fleet of unattended payment terminals across multiple parking locations presents a significant operational challenge. Firmware updates, application configuration, kiosk mode lockdown, and fault monitoring all need to be handled remotely and efficiently — without requiring on-site technical visits for routine changes.

Newland NPT Solution
U2000 integrates natively with Newland NPT's TOMS (Terminal Operation Management System), enabling Hub Parking and their local distributor to remotely configure kiosk mode, push application updates, monitor terminal health, and manage the entire deployed fleet from a central dashboard. FlyKey, Newland NPT's remote key injection solution, further secures the payment ecosystem by enabling cryptographic key management without physical terminal access — a critical capability for a geographically distributed, unattended deployment.

CONCLUSIONS

The live deployment of U2000 across Hub Parking Technology's VMC kiosk network in South Africa represents an important milestone in Newland NPT's expansion into the unattended parking segment in the MEA region. The project demonstrates U2000's ability to integrate into complex, pre-existing kiosk infrastructure while delivering a modern, secure, and fully cashless payment experience to everyday consumers.

U2000 proved to be seamlessly compatible with existing parking systems, eliminating the need for costly infrastructure redesign. It also delivers strong security and compliance through PCI PTS 6.x certification and supports efficient fleet operations through TOMS, enabling remote management across distributed parking sites. With support for NFC, Chip & PIN, and QR code payments in a single compact device, U2000 is well-positioned to support long-term unattended deployments.

As parking operators across the region accelerate the transition away from cash, U2000 delivers the integration flexibility, payment breadth, and remote management capabilities needed to modernise at scale, providing a reliable foundation for the next generation of self-service payment environments.
